HELP AVOID AND RETURN FROM ACL INJURY Young athletes are especially high in the percentages of ACL injuries that occur during sport. Ages 15-25 are the most vulnerable to injury of the ACL. Women account for 4 to 5 times more injuries than men. Approximately 250,000 ACL injuries occur per year. The only effective way to reduce the likelihood of ACL injuries, according to research, is to train proprioception. This means to improve the communication between the nerve and muscle/skeletal systems. A 20- 80% reduction in these injuries is reported with proprioceptive training. Do It Better takes this a couple steps further than regular Physical Therapy. We look at the knee as part of a system that is controlled by the foot below and the hip above. The foot responds and reacts to the ground and to gravity causing it to steer where the lower leg will go. The hip, surrounded by large muscle groups is the motor that controls the upper leg. The knee is where the two meet in the middle. And as my friend Gary Gray says "it has few places to go, and nowhere to hide". So, at the minimum, these very important areas need to be assessed in all 3 planes with multiple functions and activities to see how the knee is responding to being caught in the middle.
